Prince of Persia, or Prince of America?
December 12th 2008 00:52
I’ll keep this one short.
Why has the Prince of Persia got an American accent in the new game? Yuri Lowenthal’s voice from The Sands of Time was incredible and perfectly fit the role. Now it’s a snide, constant in-joke making Prince with a 2008 attitude to the world.
I understand Ubisoft probably wanted to Disney-fy the franchise ala Aladdin (there’s no blood just copious amounts of style), but using Nathan Drake’s voice from Uncharted (Nolan North’s voice work) just doesn’t fit into my image of the Prince of Persia.
That’s not to say I expected the Prince to be speaking Farsi, but with all the beautiful artistry and wonder, I would have expected a touch of class. And it’s mostly evident when Eleka (the leading lady) tries to speak mysteriously when discussing the doom of her land. It comes across as lame as she’s trying to speak in a British style with an American accent. It’s disconcerting.
At the end of the day, the game is fantastic (with beautifully crafted visuals, fantastic platforming and a decent narrative), but it would have sealed the deal with some British accents. Ubisoft deliberately used Nolan after his Nathan Drake performance as they saw his voice work like Harrison Ford’s portrayals of various adventure heroes in a number of films (people accepted it and loved it). Harrison Ford, dear Ubisoft, had the liberty of never having to play an ancient Arabian prince. Just sayin’!
