PSP2 is coming.

No, this isn't the PSP2 (just a fan mock up). The real thing stands to be much thinner, with no UMD drive.
Yes, this rumour has been on-going for about two years (at least) now. However, evidence is slowly beginning to build that it might finally be true.
Sony could be hoping to release a second version of their PlayStation Portable system towards the second half of this year.
Yes we know that they’ve released a revision system (the PSP 2000), but Sony only made slight changes to the screen and size.
Well, size could become even smaller if these latest rumours hold true.
A new job listing on the Sony Computer Entertainment Japan website asks for someone to "evaluate/assess" a "new games machine," and the device will be "part of the PlayStation or PSP series and their peripherals."
As we know the PS3 is still fresh and being hailed as a 10-year system, there can only be one other addition to the PlayStation family that makes any sense.
However the plot thickened even further recently with David Perry, creative officer at Acclaim, revealing that the PlayStation Portable 2 is coming and could be on the streets as early as Q3 (June ’09 onwards).
How does he know?
Well speaking to Kotaku he said: "I spoke to a developer who is working on it right now. I know this developer is already working on it, so that means they have a prototype. That would sound like a fall release to me."
Why’s he telling the press? Wouldn’t developers now no longer trust him?
Who cares! He’s told us and now we know.
Oh, by the way, Perry also claims that the PSP2 will be UMD-free. That’s right children, the days of optical disk are numbered.
Could this work?
Of course it could. Xbox live is a success. The PSN is a success. And who could forget Apple’s runaway success with the App Store? There are literally thousands of people getting rich very quickly through downloadable content.
It proves that customers find it very convenient to have programs and games downloaded straight to their device. It’s actually the only logical next step to take the PlayStation Portable.
Unfortunately for Sony, leaking this news can only mean slower sales for their current model, and with their current third place footing in the home console market, this can’t bode well for the next six months.
Here’s hoping a PS3 price cut is on its way to save the day. Remember Sony, the more systems you have in people’s homes, the more games people will buy and the more money you stand to make. And that’s discluding the profits to be garnered from Blu-Ray titles and royalties.
